… until when should we wait before violence leaves?

THIS IS A STATE OF EMERGENCY.

It's November 25th, the day we're supposed to "raise awareness" about violence against women. But honestly? We are past awareness. We need rage, and we need action.

We are in 2025, and the figures are a global shame:

• Globally, 137 women are murdered every single day by a partner or family member. This is one life lost every 10 minutes. The "safe space" of the home is the frontline of a war against us. Africa holds the highest rate of this intimate partner/family-related femicide globally.

• Here in Nigeria, the start of 2025 saw femicide cases explode by 240% in January alone, compared to the previous year. Activists aren't asking for change anymore, they are demanding a STATE OF EMERGENCY because abusers walk free, operating with sickening impunity.

• In South Africa, the crisis remains a national disgrace, with an estimated 15 women killed every single day. The country's femicide rate is estimated to be five times higher than the global average.

• In Somalia, where safety is a luxury, recent 2025 assessments in displacement camps found Sexual Assault, Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), and Child Marriage were the top reported Gender-Based Violence risks.

These aren't abstract stats. They are mothers, sisters, and daughters, people whose lives are cheapened and violently stolen. We are failing them not just physically, but through FGM, child marriage, and the pervasive digital violence that hunts women down.

The time for politely observing a UN-designated day is over.

Violence against women is a profound human rights violation, and an epidemic of global proportions. — UN Women
