Emerging from the DJ booth and stepping into her own as an artist. With confidence, culture and co-signs from the biggest names in the music industry SkylaTylaa is ready to take on the world. The London based producer has learnt how to control the room with her electrifying DJ sets featuring some of the biggest names in Amapiano, Afrobeats and Hip-hop. Now, her next step is cementing herself as an artist.
Her latest drop titled “Bombshell” is unexpected, loud and impossible to ignore. “This felt like the natural next step,” SkylaTylaa explains. “I’ve been curating music for years as a DJ, so it only made sense to create the kind of music I’d want to hear on dance floors around the world.”
Her debut single is not just another song but a celebration of bringing cultures together. Produced in collaboration with Diamond Platnumz, Tyler ICU, Khalil Harrison, and DJ Exit, Bombshell is an Afro-house and Amapiano hybrid that lives up to its name. Anchored by the Zulu phrase “Basazomangala” which is translated as “They will be shocked.” For SkylaTylaa, it’s more than a catchy hook but a prophecy about her career. The lyrics are intentional as they can be.
“I want people to be surprised by what I do,” she says. “Not just with the music, but the visuals, the energy, the entire rollout. That’s the space I’m in creatively. I’m here to shake things up.”
Her journey from being a DJ to becoming a solo artist is something that many have tried before her. However, authenticity is what they might have lacked. SkylaTylaa prides herself on being the most authentic version of herself. As she reflects on this SkylaTylaa shares advice on which received from her mentor. “One of my mentors, DJ Tunez, taught me how important it is to read the room. That stuck with me,” she says. “Even when I travel, I tailor my sets with mashups or remixes that tap into the local vibe. That connection with the crowd is everything.”
SkylaTylaa credits her love for rhythm and nightlife as the catalyst for her career. “Music raised me. Partying raised me. DJing brought those worlds together,” she says with a laugh. Influences like Wizkid, Rihanna, DJ Maphorisa, Major League DJz, and Uncle Vinny helped inspire her early on, but she’s now carving a space that’s unmistakably her own.
The music industry is male dominated space. Determined to always push the boundaries SkylaTylaa is determined to break down the walls that restrict woman in the music industry. “It starts with us,” she says. “We need to show out in our roles and then show up for each other. One of my favorite DJs in London is Harriet Bella, she’s phenomenal. Anytime I can, I put her on a lineup. We have to use our platforms for each other.”
As we discuss the creation of Bombshell, she recalls the difficulties that she faced. “Mixing and mastering nearly drove me mad,” she jokes. “I liked so many different versions it was hard to land on just one. But I’m glad I trusted my gut.”
The most memorable part creating Bombshell was pronouncing the words in Zulu. “I was running around the studio, making sure every word was right,” she recalls. “Big shoutout to Nqobile for guiding me through that. It was a fun, chaotic, beautiful session.”
As she continues to grow her brand SkylaTylaa wants to be a multifaceted creative. “‘I’m not just a DJ’ is a motto I live by,” she says. “I’m working on building a brand that touches everything from fashion to content to cultural moments. Slowly, but surely, I’m bringing that to life.”
With Bombshell already making noise online and in clubs worldwide, one thing’s for sure: the world better get ready. Because SkylaTylaa didn’t come to play she came to disrupt
